Sheila James starts her Monday, and the workweek, at 2:15 a.m. This might be normal for a baker or a morning radio host, but Ms. James is a standard American office worker.

She is 62 and makes $81,000 a year as a public health adviser for the United States Department of Health and Human Services in San Francisco. Her early start comes because San Francisco is one of the country’s most expensive metropolitan areas. Ms. James lives about 80 miles away in Stockton, which has cheaper homes but requires her to commute on two trains and a bus, leaving at 4 a.m.

Most of us can only dream about being lucky enough to have a 4 hr commute each way when we are 62 years old. And also to live in the beautiful community of Stockton. What time does she get home? 9:00 pm? Off a bus at night in one of the safest cities in CA. Eats, showers, in bed by 10:30 pm maybe. Sleep 4 hr and 15 minutes...Great for her health too..

She's missing couple of cards in her deck. None of the stupid shit she does is necessary.

Being a government worker she is probably including travel time as part of her 8hr day or giving herself 4hrs ot.

Everyone makes their own choices. I know a guy who commutes over 160 miles through traffic each day for about four hours. Why? He likes the commute. It’s his “me” time.
Not my cup of tea, but before you feel too sorry for someone who is doing something unpleasant voluntarily, stop and remember that you don’t know all their motives.

This secretary just wants what she wants, how she wants it, and is willing to pay for that in time.
She could live closer, rent out part of her house, take on a roommate, or move to a different city or job. But she stays in that situation. Must be doing something for her!

At the last place I worked which was a division of Cigna Health Care in Carrollton, Eunice commuted 125 miles one way each day--I couldn't comprehend it. Of course, her cars were used up quickly. I think it was because she was close to retirement and didn't have any choice when the company moved from where it was when she first started working there. Anyway, we both got severed out at the same time so she doesn't have to worry about it anymore. Rising at 6:00 a.m. is no problem, but the company where I worked for 30 years transferred our department to Energy Square in 1991, just four miles from me, two miles closer than downtown. But downtown required a 25 minute bus ride, so it was no problem. If I rode the bus to Energy Square, it was an hour trip with one transfer, a hassle in bad weather, so I just chose to drive most of the time since we had free covered parking.

How can anyone be productive at work while commuting 4 hours a day? It's cruel and unusual punishment.
I commuted 3 hours a day at one time, but it was temporary and I was 19 years old.

She's the biggest part of her own problem.
All of the Idiots that have to move away from SF, aren't doing anyone any huge favors moving away to where housing is more affordable. Then commuting back to the City that actively sought out to disenfranchise her. Her kind wasn't welcomed there. Make commerce and business where those folks moved to. Make the SF idiots cross the bridge and come to you for business. Those businesses in SF should have a hell of time finding help. After two years of that. SF will have the most reasonable RE in America.

You can’t. Once gen x aged college grads started promoting where I work, and started making statistical measurements of work productivity, a whole slew of unproductive people started retiring. There’s only a few holdouts and most aren’t happy. I don’t think the lady in this article understands how much damage she is doing to herself with the long commute and lack of sleep. She should probably retire and take any job where she lives.

If she likes commutes that much, she should learn how to boost cars. She can ride BART to a mall, boost a car, drive it back to a Richmond chop shop, then take BART to start all over again.

I am pretty sure that she is sleeping on the train.
