OK, I implemented a first pass at daily post limit of 7. No limit on comments yet, just posts (aka threads).
having post limits has been my wish for years.
Let me refine that a bit: New users: 1 post/day, 2 posts/week, Established users, 2 posts/day, 5 posts/week. Weeks could be rolling 7-day periods. The quality and usefulness of patnet is inversely proportional to the number of posts.

I think quality of posts is the most important thing, but how best to select for quality?
Up and down voting doesn't work very well without a lot of users.

PNet has demonstrated what I've also observed on other forums and comment sections with voting. The more politically associated a topic and comment are, the more likely to get a high number of up or down votes.
The correlary is that moderate or apolitical posts get almost no votes either way, despite these viewpoints typically expressing more thoughtful commentary.
My conclusion is up/down voting is more often a reflection of tribalism and emotional reaction.

I think you are right.
Mommy, Mommy, can I be a sanctimonious consequencor when I grow up, pronouncing dark judgment on everybody else on the internet and pissing on them from a lofty perch as if I am above it all?
there's a lot of back and forth with the comments. A lot of it gets childish....
It appears you rather bitch about it instead of taking the easy step.
This is what I'm talking about. 6 threads/posts stared in 20 minutes. I think a few may even be repeats from freespeak/nyc and the idiot doesn't even know it even though he was those previous users and posters. I know the some crappy numbers guy said he wants to see what this is all about (although I think we're on the same page), but I think it's time to officially shut this down. I don't give a flip what's going on in Hong Kong.
I'm sure there are 3 more threads posted before I'm finished. We'll see.

I could block the Hong Kong toll by IP, but that's fairly easily circumvented as well.
I would like an "ignore anonymous" because it's clear some regular posters hide behind anonymous periodically.
Why get your knickers all twisted in knots?? Life is too short.
You can call me crazy, but if shit ain't working right, I'm going to call it out. And I'll do what I can to fix it. I'm not sure what the problem is with that?
I'm pointing it out because you started this thread, remember?
daily abuse, and crap posted by some long term members here.
No problem with that! Please do help me fix things.
me123 is definitely trolling all the time, just pushing buttons. That's what ignore is for.
HOW TO RESTORE PATNET TO ITS FORMER GLORY:

You have any suggestions for @Patrick ?
It's clear I'm just supposed to put spammers on ignore even though they're creating alt's left and right. I'm supposed to just be cool with that. Please enlighten us why a bot and/or user spamming the site makes it better?
I'll be waiting.
You’ve got to be fucking kidding. You’re responding to the biggest troll I’ve ever come across in all my history of Internet forums.
Lot's of people have bad opinions though.
It's points like this where many active users here just drag it down into the gutter.
But I like fact-finding, discovering truths that are not well publicized.
I don't think that allowing other people to edit other's posts will work. Too many trolls around here that would vandalize.
the main defining property of a Wiki is that it has only one article/thread/post per topic. Having if not exactly one, then at least fewer redundant articles per topic would be a huge improvement.
