Benzos don't work instantly any more than TV "Chloroform Rag over face leads to instant pass out" tropes. In surgery, it takes several minutes of constant chloroform application every few seconds from the bottle to the gauze held firmly over the nose and mouth to produce a highly sedated state. Benzos don't give you instant black out.
