The shooting happened Friday outside a state office building that houses the Department for Children and Families, Gov. Peter Shumlin's office said. The mother, Jody Herring, was detained by people in and around the building after the shooting, police said. Barre City Mayor Thom Lauzon said the worker's shooting death was a tragedy not just for his city, which has about 10,000 residents, but for the state. "My heart goes out to the victim and the victim's family," he said. The Department for Children and Families worker, Lara Sobel, had been involved in a case that saw Herring's 9-year-old daughter...

There may be more to this than some "crazy bitch", child protective services are all about making quotas, not doing what is right.

The Russian mob wouldn't take your kids from you!

Clear case of too much big government getting into peoples lives and telling them how to raise their children. If you are not a brick in the wall, big government will not like you.

I disagree. CPS is a rock and a hard place.

You DON'T pull a kid when signs are there for danger, the parent KILLS them, the mob comes after you for why didn't you protect that kid that's your JOB. Some community policies are for temporary removal for a cooling off and evaluation period, then the kid returns. Much like under some circumstances an adult can be committed for psychiatric observation for a few days.

The pressure of the agency however is generally to keep kids in the family and offer services to fix things, if at all possible.

Generally speaking as a foster parent, there's a lot of shit going on in these broken families that THEY KNOW about, that you never will. Because even in cases like this, privacy rules matter. So unlike the police who will rush to release all the dirt they can smear, CPS will say often NOTHING at all to defend their judgement. Become a foster family, eventually you will host a 3 or 4-year old who wakes up screaming every single night because of the horrors their own parents inflicted on them. Then watch that kid go back to a grandparent in a few days or weeks, living in the same house with the parent. Then you'll wonder why they didn't remove them from the family permanently, a LOT sooner.

Our very first introduction to Foster Care, what did the county coordinator say:
"It'll never be just oh there's drugs in the family. It's drugs AND..... something. Drugs AND horiffic repeated physical abuse. Drugs AND parents revolving in and out of prison. Drugs AND family rape. Drugs AND schizophrenia where the parent refuses to take meds. Drugs and..... you get the picture."

The vast majority of kids being removed from a family situation, they go right back to the family in weeks or months. Permanent removal is a dwindling percentage as it's a lot CHEAPER to put them back in an unstable home than to keep them in the system.

Crazy lady was just crazy, y'all need a different place to hang your tinfoil hat.

Vicente it's still not up to you or government to decide how parents raise their children. Because like everything else it gets taken overboard and when human emotions collide in the decision making process, results will be biased.

All those agencies are best when they do not exist at all.

Crazy Mom ties her kid to the train tracks, you going to pull up a chair and enjoy the show? Crazy Dad says to you, I'm thinking to kill my kids, then that bitch, you going to hand him a machete and pat him on the back? That's their RIGHT!

The rest of sane society made their minds up on this a long time ago. You endanger your children, you forfeit custody. Temporarily while they evaluate just how criminal and/or insane you are. I'm telling you NOBODY gets their kids permanently removed because they left them in a hot car for a few minutes while they ran in the store, or all that bullshit you people toss around. To reach the point of permanent removal a whole bunch of visitations, courts, services, services, time..... water have already gone under a bridge. Permanent removal means something pretty serious went down and a JUDGE has deemed it not fixable. The CPS worker wouldn't make any decision on permanent removal that is the court's job.

But you go ahead and hang a 3-cornered hat on crazy lady. She was just shooting at redcoats from behind a tree.

WE don't need the Child Yanker protection team to protect kids from violent abusive people. In fact those agencies make mountains out of mole hills and pat them selves on the back for busting up typical mildly dysfunctional families, while the real monsters goes decades unreported. The monsters with their kids chained down in the basement are never discovered until the old man jumps in front of the train, and the now 40 something year old adult escaped her 3 decade prison.

With the anti domestic violence laws we have today. The DCF is overkill in most cases. Any good they do do. It isn't anything a plain old nothing special deputy of the police couldn't do as part of their normal day to day operation. Do we need an agency to rescue kids from abusive situations? NO I don't think so, I would hope there isn't enough cases to even keep them relevant. ANd there isn't. That's why they create more case load everywhere they can.

Anyone catch the impetus of last weeks Simpson's episode? It was a cheesy flashback, not much classic Simpsons humor in it. It was an editorial how grown adults make parenting decisions that in hind sight either may or may not have been the best idea. But in the end, when you really need help from the police or the government. They are the last people you should seek help from. Bart and Lisa went missing after Homer and Marge was supposed to leave the house after a very stressful string of events of a then toddler sized Lisa and Bart. Flanders got his grandmother to baby sit, she had a heart attack and dies while doing so. Lisa and Bart Freaks out and panics and runs out of the house and roams Springfield, mind you these are 3 and 4 year old versions in this flashback. Homer and Marge never left the house they stayed home and made whoopie right next door the whole time. When they realized the kids were missing they go all over Springfield looking for them to no avail. They go the police station to report the kids missing. Homer starts to tell the desk clerk at the police station he wants to file a missing kid report. The person at the desk then turns into this shaddowy sinister looking entity and the the Springfield police sign behind the desk turned into a "Department of Family services" sign. Marge grabbed Homers hand before he could say anything else and said never mind as they backpedaled out the door.

Not your normal Simpsons laugh at the fat funny man episode at all.

Here you go with extremes. Most of the time it's nowhere near that, it's personal biases and often racial biases exhibited by the staff toward others upbringing. And I'm very libertarian when it comes to parenting... you raise your kids any way you feel is right. You pull a gun on me, I have the right to kill you. Done deal.

Oh let's not go EXTREME! Like your HERO the murderess. Yeah, they just found 3 more dead bodies related to her:

Sounds like a right saint. Good you are here to white-knight for her, you should write to her in prison.

Nah, she's Trump-like in her godliness, at least in my eyes: she has never brought a rape accusation against a man. My ideal woman.

Yea, actually it does. I thought Vermont had a reputation as a small government state?
