Pretty incredible if it pans out:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/using-polio-to-kill-cancer-60-minutes/

Drugs and the whole personalized genomic medicine hype may work out well too but are a long way off for most cancers and generally aren't broad spectrum. This may be a fantastic short cut.

Highlights:

1. The polio toxins kill the cancer cells directly and targets only them because this engineered version can only live in them.
2. Once infected the cancer cells which were once tagged as 'you' in the eyes of your immune systems are suddenly tagged as 'invader' so your immune system can finish the job.

I saw this last night on 60 mins. The article is worth a read too as I don't recall this in the video:

"One of the scientists told me it takes a killer to kill a killer. And that's when I started to appreciate that if you're going to kill something as formidable and hydra-headed as cancer, you needed an agent that could do major damage."

Brilliant!

There's a lot of stuff that will cancer, actually almost anything will kill cancer. Baking Soda, Papaya Leaf extract, just a few. The problem is getting the substance in the body to target only cancer and nothing else.

You know how they make anti-venin for use against poisonous snake bites? First they start with the poison, injecting it in tiny doses into a flock of sheep. Over time the doses increase as the sheep produce higher and higher levels of antibodies to the venom. At a certain point, the sheep blood begins to be harvested at regular intervals. The blood contains the cure, in form of antibodies. Several levels of centrifuging will separate out the antibodies in a serum which is treated with preservatives and bottled for use as snake anti-venin.
Once the bitten human receives an injection of the sheep antibodies, these molecules target the venom and bind to it, signaling the patient's T-cells to attack and destroy the venom.

This is much like what is being done here with cancer therapies.

They also did a similar proof of concept using a modified version of the HIV virus to cure a girl of Leukemia I think it was. In the future therapies will be tailored to the patients genetic make-up and combinations of completely different approaches will be used for maximum efficiency.

The problem with this and other "magic bullets" aimed at cancer is the cancer mutates rendering the bullet harmless.
If it can destroy the tumors and stray cells quick enough it could work.
There is a 3 part series by Ken Burns just started on PBS about the modern war on cancer
