Or is it? Hmmm, what could it be, what could be producing all that light?

Bakken Oil Fields, seen this before. Year or so ago after the NASA Black Marble pics came out I think.

As seen from ISS:

How can you argue with the overlaid image? Are you saying I modified the image to move the bright spot or something?

Overlay the two images and see for yourself. If you can.

I think you are right. It's in America.

I don's see what would cause that light in ND.

OK, so you are saying the original image is bullshit? Not that the lighted area is in the US? Because earlier you seemed to be saying the bright spot was in Canada.

no my thinking originally was that anything that could cause that much light was further north. the population of the bakkens would not create that amount of light.

19   MisdemeanorRebel   2014 Jun 9, 3:50pm

It's North Dakota. Came across it in the Coursera "Our Energy Future" course.

The course is free, btw.

No, no. Wrong State. You're thinking of the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. You can hear such classics as:

He's saying the latitude of the lights is between Portland/Seattle and below the northern shore of Lake Superior numbnuts. That would be the bakkan oilfield in ND. Everyone else got it, try to keep up with the class.

Typical right wingnut bunker mentality "logic" (aka stupidity). If the only tool you have is a hammer then everything looks like a nail. Obviously you believe any time someone says moron it means conservative. Paranoid much?

I never said conservative moron amplification (thanks for providing a concrete example though). You assumed that since I'm not as far right as you, hitler, and franco that I'm a liberal (wrong) solely commenting against conservatives (wrong part deux). I'm just as contemptuous of liberal willful ignorance and moron amplification.

I will say at the risk of a broad generalization that conservatives seem to try much harder to be more vocal about being willfully ignorant. I can't think of any far left wing equivalents to rush, the fox news butt brothers, o'reilly, beck, coulter, etc.. I know it's hard for the rightious right to believe but there are vastly more moderates than conservatives and most are turned off by the constant bullshit being spewed out. If it wasn't for the democratic parties habit of shooting itself in the dick a large part of the republican party would be extinct.

The purpose of debate, is not to determine a winner and a looser, unless you're a 15 y.o lame enuff to participate in a HS debate team.

Debating is supposed to bring gain to both parties, as they learn from one anothers perspective. To replace previously held conceptions, with better information.

There's not much debating anymore, just a contest to see which dumb ass screams the loudest

Clinging to the mistake and asserting it was still right in the face of contrary evidence? This is not just about making a mistake. And in fact, that's what you do on every thread here, but this is a black and white issue, so it's easier to point out what a crackpot you are here than it typically is.

The context I looked at was based on a cloudy image of where the great lakes were in reference to the circle as the idea that there are no cities in ND that would put out that much light.

I hereby re-christen Indigenous as 49th Parallel.

Failing a second grade geography class is one thing. When doing so in the absence of evidence to the contrary shows a failure to think critically, and that cannot be excused as a mere mistake. If you are this fucking stupid, AND you can't see reality, why should we trust you on more complex issues?

You did this in another thread recently too -- refusing to recognize black and white evidence that you were just dead wrong:

http://patrick.net/?p=1243445&c=1090111#comment-1090111

You're just not arguing here in good faith, plus you are too stupid to know that you're stupid. Good faith means that you can respond to evidence. Your behavior here shows that even on the most basic of issues, you refuse to acknowledge evidence that shows your worldview is wrong. Again, why should we put up with this on more complex issues if you fail so miserably on such a simple one?

Incidentally, the "I know you are, but what am I?" second grade non-sense again shows your level of debate.

Generally speaking, debate with people I disagree with means that I learn something, but only when they are intelligent, engage in good faith, can make arguments based on evidence and logic, and are truly willing to have an open mind. It's sad that you can't rise beyond your limited level of critical thinking because you truly lower the level of debate on Patnet.

36   swebb   2014 Jun 10, 5:46am

No, the mistake is excusable. I agree that it's not
obviously in thr US from just the satellite photo. It's the degree with which you clung to your beliefs in spite of evidence to te contrary that makes you look dumb. You were holding a tenuous position, thinking it was a slam
dunk....and you didn't even realize that not only were you on thin
ice, you were absolutely wrong. Yeah, that makes you look a little dim.

bob2356 says

It's not about being harsh. People who can't think critically add no value to this forum; they just take up space. 49th Parallel is not the only party guilty of this, but he has crashed and burned magnificently twice in the face of contrary evidence in the last week.

39   David9   2014 Jun 10, 6:49am

One other reader thought this, "Bakken formation', oil fields.

"What we have here is an immense and startlingly new oil and gas field — nighttime evidence of an oil boom created by a technology called fracking. Those lights are rigs, hundreds of them, lit at night, or fiery flares of natural gas. One hundred fifty oil companies, big ones, little ones, wildcatters, have flooded this region, drilling up to eight new wells every day on what is called the Bakken formation."

I searched for "Space 2013: Mysterious Lights in the Midwest"
This thread was the top match for Google query ha ha

You come here for critical thinking in this forum???

Not from you typically, although you have a flash every once in a while, unlike 49th Parallel and some other people here. Many other people are willing to provide it freely, however.

Realistically, you're not going to get critical thinking from people who can't think outside of ideology and labels. Anyone who can't express good ideas without constantly saying "liberal" or "conservative" isn't really giving good ideas. A good argument can stand on its own without being intertwined with a particular political philosophy, and intertwining is a sign of weakness.

41   corntrollio   2014 Jun 10, 7:32am

Call it Crazy says

Since you're not getting your value of critical thinking skills here each month, I suggest you not pay your expensive monthly subscription fee...

Well, I'd point out that the Miscellaneous and Politics sub-categories are filled with the most crackpots. The signal to noise ratio is extremely low for those, and that's why I don't read them very much. The Real Estate and Economics forums are better about self-policing and have far more critical thinking.

I'm not sure what this has to do with paying or not paying. Being part of a community usually means that I'd like to improve that community when I can. If you have no interest in leaving it better than you found it, we just don't see eye to eye there.

Sowell is a well respected economist whom i have followed for years. You cite one oversight in decades of work, so fucking what.

You cite 2 errors in several thousand posts i have made, so fucking what.

You imply that i need your approval, you flatter yourself.

What You do do is conflate issues that logically cannot be conflated. Yet you do not follow your own advise?

45   EBGuy   2014 Aug 22, 7:24am

Hopefully the 'lights' will be getting dimmer (by 2020). They flare about $100 million of natural gas a month; no wonder mineral rights holders are PO'd.
Trying to manage the growth of the Bakken, North Dakota in July passed new flaring standards, with the goal of having drillers capture 90 percent of all the gas they release by 2020. Drillers now capture roughly 72 percent. When the new standards come into effect in October, drillers will have to raise that figure to 74 percent, with subsequent gains made leading up to 2020.

curious2 said: In my opinion, ordinary hybrids should only ever be a niche market for vehicles that do a lot of stop-and-start driving, for example taxis.
Oh come on. Hybrids even beat TDIs in many of the categories for 5 year cost of ownership. From Consumer Reports:
Small cars: Toyota Prius C
Family sedans: Toyota Camry Hybrid
Upscale & luxury cars: Lexus CT 200h
Minivans & wagons: Toyota Prius V

EBGuy says

From Consumer Reports:

Thanks for the link. I'm glad to see that some hybrids have become better values than last time I checked, but I note three things:
1) Consumer Reports acknowledged that only some hybrids pay back their additional cost within five years, while others don't.
2) "To calculate fuel costs, we assume the vehicles are driven 12,000 miles a year, the average reported by respondents to our annual survey." IMMV: if you drive less, it will take longer than five years to recoup the difference in purchase price. (Conversely, if you drive more, e.g. a taxi or Uber, you might recoup the cost sooner, especially in a city where you have a high % of start/stop/slow miles.)
3) Consumer reports included taxes in the cost of ownership; although the article does not say explicitly whether that calculation includes subsidies for hybrids, those would skew the results away from the underlying energy use.
When Subaru finally introduced a hybrid, I read reviews, but they tended to be discouraging.

The advantage of plug-in hybrids as a category will likely become compelling by around 2020 due to improvements in battery technology, but meanwhile you are still looking at a category where even the best performers may take 60,000 miles to recoup the up-front cost. Those miles would need to include a high number of "city" (i.e. stop/start/slow) miles, which is where hybrids get better fuel economy than non-hybrids. Also, many city dwellers lack a place to plug in their hybrids; PatNet had a thread on that IIRC.

Peak use for electric - charging plug-in vehicles - will happen at night, when many forms of renewable energy (not just solar but wind in most places) is at it's nadir.

They should just get there electricity from Spain where they can generate electricity at night.
