Jose Luis De Haro of El Economista on the New York Stock Exchange recently about the economy and the upcoming U.S. Presidential elections. "It's likely [the U.S.] will have weakness, if not a recession," said Shiller commenting on the economic outlook. "It's kind of a trend. The whole world has been slowing down now for more than two years. We had a nice rebound from the depth, but I suspect its not sustainable." De Haro than asked whether the elections would have an impact on the trajectory of the economy. "I think we'll get Obama again," answered Shiller. "There's a...

Seems to me that Obama's plan is to turn us into Europe. Complete with chronically high unemployment and an uncompetitive cost structure and loads of welfare benefits and runaway debt.

You mean his plan is more Europe'er than Obama's path?
it will be just like Europe 'cept he wont have the rabid liberals yelling "Fuck YEAH!" behind him with every pen stroke.

austerity ?
sounds good.. shifting growth to the private sector is what we want.
its much easier to transform an economy from net importer to net exporter as we slow down later to shift gear as growth takes hold.
therefore we are addressing both govt budget deficit and high unemployment.

For most of my life, many roads lead to "it'll turn us into Soviet Russia".
Mrs. Vicente says "turn us into Europe" is meaningless drivel. We're going to become a lashup of countries who would shiv each other in a second, with a flacid attempt at central banking without a common economy? Naaahh!
Seems more like Japan from here.

Well, before you comment on the details of Romney's plan, perhaps you should actually look at it?

If your take on the debates was that Obama and Biden told more lies, you have a serious reading and thinking problem... Mitt completely disavowed nearly everything he's ever said... I was waiting for Obama to say, "I think his mormon religion is fine" and Mitt to respond, "wait a minute, i never said I'm a mormon" that was about the only thing missing!

I'm not sure if Greece really has had any meaningful austerity. I mean the retirement age there is still only 67, when it should probably be at least 80.

OK, but shouldn't the retirement age in Greece be higher, more like substantially higher than it is in Germany? Currently the retirement age in Germany is higher than it is in Greece.

No, but if we continue to fight wars in the middle east like Romney wants, we certainly will end up like Europe.

The scary thing is that Romney wants a fight with Russia. He said in his foreign policy speech that Putin is enemy number 1. He is way over his head talking neocon.
Putin will never allow the missile shield which would change the balance of power between the US and Russia. Putin will destroy it and Romney will cry like a teenager. Or, we will all be destroyed.
Don't vote neocon. Don't vote Romney.

Retirement age in Germany is 67. Germany is allegedly the economic heart of Europe. Maybe, must maybe, the retirement age doesn't mean diddly.
I got a great idea, how about just move it up to say 120. That'll show 'em!
I love austerity, it's always lovingly applied to the peasants and never to the bankers.

You never hear "No more discount window, big banks! Find more depositors on your own or borrow from a competitor; we're in Austerity here!"

Why do you think they are tanking the dollar Wong? They are doing so to try to bolster exports. It is not as easy as it looks. Austerity does not work and can actually increase debt.
