'Escape from New York'? No!! Escape from Detroit!! It should be fenced in to make it one giant prison. Who would be so stupid to buy there and think it was a bargain?

I am wondering how showing up with a running chainsaw might be taken by a threatening squatter... no court would convict this woman of anything.

This situation, perpetuated by the Obamanites, is intolerable. If allowed to continue our country will find itself in a new civil war. It used to be ownership was 90% of the law, now it's access to free legal but taxpayer funded advise that is 100% of the law.

If Romney gets in it will not only continue it will be restored to the levels it was when Bush was in office.

That is bizarre. If the trespasser slips and falls, she will probably sue the homeowner too. What a mess we have descended into.

Suing and winning are two different things. Anyone can sue for anything. Always was that way. Don't delude yourself into believing we've, "deescended" into anything new. Turn off your TV.

Another distraction brought to you by Faux News. During the same year that a squatter was living in a Detroit house, hundreds of people were killed by homicide in Detroit, and hundreds more nationwide were killed by lightning. Faux News doesn't report on those people because "weather reform" is not a Republican talking point; "tort reform" is, so they report on this. Turn off your TV or at least occasionally change the channel.

Oh please. Try and ask the rate of liability insurance of any small business these days. This is tresspassing, back then one could use a gun on the unwanted "guest".

    This is tresspassing,

The doctrine of adverse possession goes back centuries to British common law. This Faux News story is a distraction intended to divide people over nothing. It worked.

We are not ruled by the British anymore. Liability insuarance these days are huge. While not everyone may win, the costs of defending yourself are not cheap.

The source is irreleavnt-if you had to leave for a year, pay taxes, bills etc and come back and find squatters on your property, are you saying you will embrace them with open arms and sing kumbayah??

The 13 original states adopted British common law at the founding of the republic, and the doctrine of adverse possession has remained in every state continuously since that time.

As for your complaint about the cost of insurance, you are blaming the wrong villain: insurance companies promote Faux stories like this one to scare people into buying insurance, and people fall for it instead of insisting on their 6th Amendment right to counsel. (Technically the 6th Amendment applies only in criminal cases, but the same right should extend equally to civil cases.) Anyone who is sued or arrested ought to have a right to a competent public defender, but instead that right is limited to the indigent, while the 1% can afford unlimited defense, and everyone in the middle is scared - which is how the insurance companies want it.

Rather the 2nd amendment and the right to shoot a home invader ;) You're going off a tangent here, the point is very clear and not complicated at all: It should be only a matter of hours to find out the rightful owner of a house and evict a squatter. If not, jail the banks, city clerks and other officials who fucked up the titles/liens and created that mess, or even better, have the squatter move in with one of them.

True, but government and service of process have not kept up with the advance of technology, partly due to entrenched industries and partly due to budget cuts. In California, budget cuts have closed courts and laid off police so the state can spend more money on medical insurance. Also in this particular case the squatter is evidently nuts and neither party has anywhere else to go, and I have to wonder why the neighbors didn't say anything during the owner's yearlong absence; it's a very unusual case, presented to serve an agenda other than trying to inform people, and it illustrates why Faux News viewers tend to be the least informed of any network.

Honestly I didn't get the insurance angle (house-owner insurance or legal-insurance?) but as a renter I am not super familiar with the details of house-ownership ;) But be it as it may, how can you obtain a construction lien on a property that you don't own and without a written contract by the owner for the construction work you are supposed to provide? Someone has either to go to jail, take the squatter in with themselves or at least get fired from their day-job..

Insurance was brought up by someone else. Construction liens are generally for contractors that fix houses, e.g. in danger of collapse. What you don't get is that the whole story is a waste of time, a distraction. In a city where most people (literally a majority) are trying to move away to escape homicidal anarchy, Faux News "scoops" a bizarre property case to distract its audience. I'm not going to waste more time on it.

It is easy as pie if you tell the police they threatened you with a weapon.

Insurance companies hiking rates to increase profits has nothing to do with the breakdown of society. Turn off Fox News.

I make fun of Fox news viewers as much as any. But stop trying to blame everything on Fox news. Or take the squatter in your house and provide her with food and shelter.
