In spite of that, more and more Americans have been experiencing trouble accessing a dentist in recent years. It's not just the shortage of dentists that's the problem. It's also a reflection of how many people can't afford the cost of care or who lack dental insurance.

Dental Therapists would cut costs for dental procedures in half, provided services to millions who cannot afford them at present, and, create literally thousands of good paying jobs.
We have Physician Assistants, paralegals - why not dental therapists?

Yeah, Christ how strong do you really have to be to jam a chisel at the gum line and smash a rock down on the other end?

I agree with APOCALYPSEFUCK. It's not that hard to pull a tooth, so why not farm that out to a dental therapist.
BTW, I am told that in third world countries, if you have a problem with a tooth, they just pull it. They don't even do cavities.

Right, in America we have access to cheap tools made by slaves in China so we can pull our own teeth!
That's what Freedom is all about!

I'm not sure the profession is ready to let the public know that nothing a dentist does is exactly rocket science.

I say go for it, guys! Give your buddy a pair of pliers.
After yanking on your jaw and dislocating it or fracturing it, or tearing off a huge chunk of bone, or ripping open your sinus, then breaking the tooth off in the gum, only to have it abcess and send you to the hospital, I'll bet you'll be so glad for the money you saved!
It'll be really impressive when you see your friend standing there with your tooth, a big piece of your jawbone, and a long strip of your esophageal muscle dangling from it. Not to mention the spurting blood. He'll probably fracture some ribs and leave handprints on your chest, too, sitting on you to get some leverage.
It's just so easy.

With the proper tools I could train a monkey to do it. A child can read the x-rays then the monkey can cut the tooth into two to four pieces if it starts to fracture. If necessary the monkey can make a small incision and remove the segments. The monkey will also be taught to put in a couple of stitches to avoid dry socket. Good monkey.

Ha, Ha! I watched professional hockey once. It was easy, just hit the puck into the net, what's all the fuss, a monkey could do it.
I watched pro football once, it looked easy, just get the ball down the field, anybody could do it.
I watched a diamond cutter cut a diamond. Child's play, all you have to do has hit it with a chisel a few times, how hard could it be.
I watched brain surgery once, it was easy, just flap the old skull, and there the brain is, easy peasy.
