Greece's triple-jump champion was expelled from the Olympics after posting a tasteless tweet about Africans and the West Nile virus.

The track athlete posted a tweet reading, "with so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitos will be eating food from their own home." The comments created an uproar on Greek social media.

Greece later announced it explelled Papchristou from Olympics.

Yeah, this does not sound like racism, but rather one athlete talking shit about others. Not sure what the point it, but it sounds far more like a nationalist taunt than a racial comment like "at least all the sheep will feel loved now that the Scotts are here". Perhaps tasteless, but hardly racist. And don't athletes commonly taunt their opponents? If the NY Mets said the Detroit Tigers smelled bad, would that be racist just because Detroit has a large black population? I don't think so. The Olympic committee looks like it's just being politically correct. It's trying to avoid a controversy and is willing to brush aside an athlete to do so. zzyzzx says Obligatory: Yep, she is hot.

That they would hold some personal feelings back rather than to make a comment that can be construed as racist. The amount of time, money & energy that is poured into oly athletes should be considered before they post something that stupid in social media. I can see where some might feel that the comment was racist.

True, but the only way to construed it as racist is to assume that the very word African is racist, but it's not. The thing is, the comment doesn't actually say anything derogatory. It actually doesn't say anything at all -- like most tweets -- other than there are mosquitoes in Africa and that humans are food to mosquitoes. Both statements are true, but not particularly relevant to anything. It's like she was trying to make a joke, but there was no punchline to it. Then again, maybe it's funnier in Greek.

Probably competition between immigrants and locals, for jobs, business opportunities, etc. Seems, the youth may have a bit of a handle on it as well.

The punishment did not fit the crime. She could have expressed her opinion with better taste, but overall, it's not fair to take away something she worked for for several years for that.
