Science is responsible for every convenience, every gadget, every luxury, and every security in your life. From medicine, to food, to air conditioning, to toothpaste, to indoor plumbing, to clean water, to television, to the Internet, to video calls, to washing machines, science and engineering are responsible for almost everything that makes your life long and happy. Notable exceptions include puppies, babies, and rainbows.

" the entire American-style set of regulations, clinical trials and lengthy waiting periods are now a serious deterrent to innovation".

    That's one problem.
    Others are:
    1. General deterioration of post graduate education in the last 10 years here. (My friend who works in UCLA affiliated Research bio lab) says most of their work nowadays moved to Singapore, even though the cost of living is much higher than in LA out there. It's simply easier to find well educated young researchers there.

    2. Inefficient and ideologically driven funding processes. Getting a grant is the major task for a scientist, while often grants are given by a corporation that actually orders wanted results. Proving pre-determind results is not a research. Even if the results are not falsified, it's mostly waist of researchers time.

one very poor ill runned, overhyped, hi cash burn industry... and not a good example in many ways to illustrate innovation. Do a the nation and world a favor and ignore it .. your better off reducing regulations to foster manufacturing in auto, aerospace, high tech, energy and many other industries.

Seems to me that the primary beneficiaries of US taxpayer funded science are owners of factories in China.

Since gross margins are around 50% that would mean what ever $1 of product revenue from end consumer: Chinese factories get 50%.. employee salaries, employee taxes and benefits, factory landlords, equipment used in factories built in China, Chinese Income Taxes and the list goes on...

Yes! they are getting 50 cents on every dollar spent...
