I'm a little worried that the paintball CO2 tanks are not really food items. Could they have some contaminant in them?

What about getting a giant food-grade CO2 tank like McDonalds uses, and some adapter for that?

Maybe I'll get one of those, but I bet most people will not. They'll just go with the Sodastream bottles and be happy they're paying less than they'd pay in the store for fizzy water (if they drink that).

So are the earnings of SODA going to go up in the next couple of years? That's really my question here.

Looks like they have a good business model, but a P/E of 25 is very high. HIgh starts at 15 in my book, so better look for stocks around P/E of 10-12. However in this market that may be hard.

I follow Peter Lynch's advice: if the P/E is lower then the growth rate percentage, it's OK to buy.

new Samsung refrigerator dispenses sparkling water

This is good news for SODA actually, since the Samsung fridge will use a SodaStream-made dispenser!

there seem to be some issues searching for specific comments. Searching via DuckDuckGo or Google, Patrick.net gets many prominent hits, but clicking on them tends to produce errors, e.g.

500 Internal Server Error

nginx/1.2.1

Likewise, Patrick.net's internal search function produces many false hits, for example searching for "city-journal" returns every occurrence of city or journal.

yes, it's still in a terrible half-baked state.

trying to figure out how the new categories relate to each other:

companies have events, jobs, technologies, investors
events have companies, but not jobs...
jobs have technologies but not investors...

hopefully will figure all that out today.

Ah well, it was a fun gamble. They had a few things going for them, like a product that's really useful, but what they did not have was a dividend.

Lesson learned (yet again): never buy any stock that does not pay a dividend.

  Patrick   ignore (1)   2015 Feb 26, 8:52am   ↑ like (1)   ↓ dislike (0)   quote   flag

it works perfectly if all you want is fizzy water.

sure, dividends can go up or down, but a company that is consistently paying out a dividend has proved it has some real earning power, and the guts to return some of its cash to the rightful owners, the shareholders. without that, it's much less certain that the company should even exist (from the shareholder's point of view).

money talks.

making the H2O fizzy doesn't really add value IMO

it does add value for us though. we like plain fizzy water, and don't want to buy it or carry it home. sodastream also makes it more cheaply than buying it, about 25c / liter.

Domino died this morning at the age of 6 after an illness of about 2 months. She will be missed.

One of the other chickens was sitting next to her in the nest box this morning when we found her. Chickens do seem to watch out for each other when they are ill.

the appropriate response might be a counter-bds campaign.

i guess everyone would lose, but the richest people/organizations/countries would lose the least.

bds is really about imposing political correctness via economics.

BayArea says

Patrick, just a thought...

For new posts, have you considered changing the order of the title and the image when using cell-phone?

It just seems intuitively, I would prefer to read the title then see the related image, and not vice-versa?

@BayArea yes, it's a good idea, but i have not been able to get that to work on mobile devices. the formatting goes badly wrong if i try to put the image after the title.

maybe if you know css/html you can figure out a method that works and show me. you could just use the browser developer tools to change things around, or save the page and muck with it statically.

You can do time ranges on YouTube videos, for example:

  Patrick   ignore (1)   2016 Jul 26, 7:56am   ↑ like (1)   ↓ dislike (0)   quote   flag

that was done with a url like this: https://www.y outube.com/v/chElHV99xak?start=53&end=59

i put the space in the url to break it so it wouldn't actually get converted.

If you want to write a post totally anonymously, just enter it while logged out, and when it asks for an email address put in some crap email like this@that.com. The post will go into moderation and I'll get notified that it needs approval. There's a delay for approval, but then your post is anonymous.

If I make a new post and it drifts down the list it disappears.

IOW the posts do not appear to be in chronological order?

By default they are in chronological order of activity (creation or new comment), and you eventually have to go to the second page to see a post if no one has commented on it lately.

But there are tabs for sorting other ways: number of comments in last week, number of likes, newest post creation time.

Hi @justme yes, I got an email when you edited and put that in.

Should there be some limit on the ability to change usernames? It does get confusing when they get quoted under one name, but have since changed it so that the old quote and new comments appear under different names.

  Patrick   ignore (1)   2017 Jan 16, 12:07pm   ↑ like (0)   ↓ dislike (0)   quote   flag

I cannot easily trace changes of username, because the previous name is overwritten in the database when a user changes it.

It would be possible to trace some name changes by looking at quotes of user comments, but it would be a lot of work, and still not reliable because the quotes could be edited at any time. I suppose I have backups and could look at the state of the database over time, but that would also be hard.

It would be easier to create a new table of names which shows changes over time from now on. Is it worth the work?

What does gmail do? Can you change your gmail address and retain the same account?

Finally back in the black with SODA!

I read that they are going back to their fizzy water roots and giving up on sweetened drinks, and that's what's driving the uptick.

Now I'm significantly in the black with SODA. Nice.

And it seems to be a legit rise:

http://finance.yahoo.com/m/9bb1ed23-c235-38ac-8f1f-6685c03a4bcd/ss_sodastream-shares-pop-like-a.html

SodaStream's (SODA) profit tripled in the fourth quarter as the carbonated-beverage device maker easily bested expectations on Wall Street. Diluted earnings rocketed to 71 cents a share from a prior-year profit of 24 cents on 17% revenue growth to $131.8 million, well above analyst views for EPS of 30 cents and revenue of $124.8 million.

Don't worry about the house thing. Stock market worked out at least as well for me. I wasn't wrong at all about waiting. But when I was really really right, in 2009, I probably should have bought. At least from the financial point of view.

Never said anyone shouldn't buy a house. Just said they shouldn't overpay.

I hope things are going well for you.

The new version of the site is here:

Not yet finished, but very close. I hope that users who know Javascript will read the source and submit patches to make the site better:

Interestingly, this very comment is being made via the new code and the bold text error is still there. So I propagated the problem by simply translating large swathes of php code to javascript, lol.

she's afraid of renting and then moving again if we're not at the same school.

Consider trying to get a long-term lease, like 5 years. Landlords like stability too.

That would give you some breathing room, and the lease could simply have a payment option to break it, like paying an extra month.
