Friend became homeless recently,
Being in the "good former co-worker" category I am sure -- at least I hope -- you are not the first person he called, or maybe he was too embarrassed to call a "real" friend.
Hopefully spending the week in a donated hotel room will give him enough perspective to face reality.
If he has been unemployed for "a while" and has been looking for work "for a long time" his resume is already ruined.
He is not "close to getting a job" unless he is -- at the very least -- getting call backs for second round interviews, the long time silent responses to his resume should be a deafening proclamation as to the status of his job search.
You are correct that he should expand his job search to include Costco, Starbucks, etc. Being able to pay ones' bills is much more attractive to a perspective employer than homeless/couch surfing longtime unemployment. It sounds like he is letting his pride get in the way of his survival.
Anyway, it sounds like you have done more than could be expected of you for now. I would probably check in on him in a few days and see how things are going.
I am sure that it sucks to be in his position and I hope everything works out in the end.

Wonderfully Diverse Neighborhood Riots... in ultragenerous SWEDEN,
In America too, you can't spank your children or child services will take them away while putting financial penalties on the parents.
I am not sure if you are just unaware of US law on this topic, or if what you call a "spanking" others would call a "savage beating."
Every state in the union allows parents to spank their children. Hell, even in the west coast freak kingdom parents can spank their kids until their butts are red and sore, they just can spank to the point of "serious physical injury", as per WELFARE AND INSTITUTIONS CODE SECTION 300-304.7.
Anyway, I am sure that Sweden's anti-spanking policy is to blame for the recent riots by immigrant youth because the native Swedes who are also not spanked have been rioting out-of-control for decades, but that just does not make the news...yeah, that must be it...

Please Accost: '1 percent moms who hire disabled guides to cut lines at Disney,
I see more people in the the Disney Land hotel lobby checking in with those temporary strap on foot casts than the number "injured/crippled" people checking into all other hotels I have checked into combine. Rent a wheelchair, and wha-La! access to the wheelchair access lines.
Yes, people from all socioeconomic backgrounds can be selfish assholes. I guess for the rich it is worth $1k+/day so that they themselves don't have to appear handicapped.
From what I understand Disneyland used to have a problem with groups of teenagers renting wheelchairs to "cut" in line. I believe that they have curbed that.
